“Food is symbolic of love when words are inadequate.” —A lan D. Wolfelt

I love to think about a bespoke wedding cake or dessert as a harmony of flavour and design, irrespective of size.   An intimate ceremony may sometimes allow for a more considered, detail-oriented experience- this can absolutely be reflected in your cake or patisserie

Here are some ideas to inspire you:

The cake cutting ceremony is an age-old tradition that has evolved in many ways- and still remains a much loved part of a wedding. It is a beautiful way to share your love and capture some memories to treasure forever.

A small cake can be just as striking and detailed as its larger friends.  My advice would be to approach the design process like you would a larger tiered cake. Think about your vision for your day and the story you would like to tell through all the elements. Look beyond existing cake designs to things that inspire you and other design details of your day that can be interpreted on your cake.

To create something spectacular yet elegant, consider focusing on one or two design elements that are well executed. Lot of historic buildings have some intricate architectural detail. Your cake design could be inspired by the detail on a segment of the ceiling at your venue. This can create depth and interesting textures. The cake below is a great example of this.

Another example is this single tier cake which was inspired by the beautiful bow detail on a wedding dress. Although it is one bow, I added detail and interest by creating folds and movement reminiscent of the actual fabric bow.

If you are only having a ceremony or are not keen on the cake cutting tradition, a great way of sharing a cake experience with your guests would be by having individual mini cakes or desserts. What are your favourite flavours? You could have them interpreted as mini naked cakes, finished with piped buttercream flowers/fruit or have delicious mini profiterole towers. These can be beautifully packaged in keeping with your wedding design.

For a real foodie experience, each of your guests could receive a patisserie box containing a variety of desserts. This could include some of your favourite desserts, some nostalgic childhood loves, or patisserie symbolic of your wedding destination or heritage.  From canelé, to tarts, to panna cotta, there are so many options. You can really be creative with this both in flavour and presentation.
